Electricity is all around us, we use electrical appliances every day and we rarely think about the danger electricity can represent to us - Just a few simple checks can literally save your life.
Thousands of people in the UK regularly take unnecessary risks exposing themselves to potentially fatal consequences by not being sufficiently careful when it comes to electricity. One of the wisest measures you can take is ensuring that all your appliances, wiring and connections are in a well maintained safe condition. You can do this by making regular visual inspections and have a qualified electrician check everything is safe once every year or two.
First of all you can check the RCD unit or fusebox (we always recommend you get your old fusebox replaced with an RCD unit as they are far safer) Another safeguard you can employ is making sure your plug sockets are not overloaded and that they are all in safe condition. Look over the plugs and cables looking for loose wires or cracked casings which need attention.
Check all light fittings are secure and that the right power rating of bulbs is in use. Avoid storing anything inflammable near the RCD or main fusebox and also watch out for damp or moisture as this can corrode electrical connections over time and cause serious problems.
Avoid ever carrying any electrical appliances into the bathroom and apply the same vigilance to using electrical items outside as this can be very dangerous also.
We recommend that you switch off anything that is not in use and remember that we have far more electrical appliances in the home nowadays than we used to like TVs, DVD, computers, chargers, a plethora of gadgets and appliances in the kitchen, so the risk levels are higher than ever and the number of house fires caused by poor wiring and unsafe electrical installations is rising continually in the UK.
By applying safe practices and maintaining all electrical items correctly we can keep the risk factor to a minimum.
